Why Taking Your Kids to Live Music Concerts is So Important

Last weekend, my son Luke and I had an amazing time at a live music concert at Valhalla  in Wellington. The band we went to see is a grunge band from Wellington, and the lead singer has been taking singing lessons through The Rock Academy, where I also teach vocals. It was an fun experience—not just because of the music—but because of what it meant for bonding and inspiring my son.

Luke has been learning ukulele and guitar since he was six years old, and as a teenage musician, he’s always hungry for new inspiration. Seeing live musicians perform up close, feeling the energy of the crowd, and watching his favorite instruments in action really lit a spark in him. By the end of the gig, he was more excited than ever to pick up his guitar and practice. Moments like these are priceless for encouraging creativity in kids.

Music Concerts as Bonding Time

Attending a concert with your child is about so much more than just music. For teenagers, quality bonding experiences with parents are crucial for mental health and well-being. Sharing a passion, cheering together, and experiencing the thrill of live music helps build a stronger connection between parent and child.

Inspiration Through Experience

Watching talented musicians perform can also motivate young learners in a way that lessons alone sometimes can’t. Luke saw the lead singer—who he already knew was learning and growing through lessons at The Rock Academy—perform live and realized that hard work and practice really pay off. It’s a reminder that musical growth is exciting, visible, and achievable.

Why Parents Should Take Their Kids to Concerts

  • Encourages creativity – Experiencing live music shows kids what’s possible with dedication and practice.

  • Strengthens parent-child bonds – Shared experiences create memories that last a lifetime.

  • Boosts motivation – Seeing real performers in action inspires kids to practice and explore their own musical talents.

  • Supports mental health – Fun, engaging activities with family reduce stress and increase happiness for teenagers.

Taking Luke to see a live show wasn’t just a fun night out—it was an opportunity to bond, inspire, and celebrate music together. Whether it’s a local band, a concert at a music venue like Valhalla Halla Valhalla in Wellington, or a bigger festival, live music experiences can leave a lasting impression on your child.

If you have kids who are learning instruments, or just love music, I highly recommend making concert trips a regular part of your family life. The memories, inspiration, and shared joy are worth every minute.
