Why The Rock Academy Holiday Programme Is So Cool (and Seriously Fun)

If you’ve got a young musician at home who loves music (or just needs a confidence boost and something exciting to do in the school holidays), The Rock Academy Holiday Programme is hard to beat. Based right here in **Wellington**, it’s packed with music, mates, and real-life performing experience kids remember for years.

A holiday programme that feels like being in a band

This isn’t a “sit quietly and learn scales” kind of programme. The vibe is energetic, creative, and hands-on. Students get stuck into **playing pop and rock songs**, learning the parts that make a song sound tight, and building the skills that actually help them perform—timing, listening, confidence, and stage presence.

The highlight: getting out there and busking in Wellington

One of the most unique parts of our holiday programme is the **daily busking**. Students head out into Wellington and perform for real people. It’s exciting, a little nerve-wracking (in a good way), and an amazing way to learn fast.

Busking helps kids learn how to:

- handle nerves and keep going

- work as a team

- connect with an audience

- perform with confidence in the real world

And yes—sometimes they even earn money while they play, which is a pretty awesome bonus.

Songwriting, creativity, and loads of laughs

Alongside learning songs and performing, there’s also time for **songwriting and creative sessions**, where students can experiment, come up with ideas, and try new things in a supportive environment. It’s the kind of “controlled chaos” that makes holidays feel like holidays—busy, fun, and full of stories to bring home.

Wellington-based, with a great setup

We’re based in **Wellington**, and our holiday programmes run in **Kilbirnie** (at Evans Bay Intermediate School). Days are structured, but still feel relaxed and fun—music sessions mixed with breaks and games to keep energy high.
