Many people ask at what age should you start learning the guitar. It's a great question as young children are easily influenced when they see a cool person on-screen rocking hard or playing some beautiful picking, it's something that can have a huge impact!
Physicality
The problem is that physically guitar is the hardest of all the contemporary instruments to play. The muscles that are used for playing the guitar are very unique and are not used much. Unlike piano or drums for instance.
Ukulele first
I started my kids on ukulele at the age of 6 and they progressed very fast and even played a gig at the age of seven. They were eager to start guitar so we switched instruments. Unfortunately their progess slowed down for more than a year. In hind sight it would have been better to keep them on ukulele until they were nine or even ten.
The ideal age
I would say that 8 or 9 is the best age to start guitar but there is nothing wrong with starting at the age of five. If you start earlier it means they need less practice to progress and less nagging from the parent to create a happy young musician.
