Geoff founded The Rock Academy in 1998. He has a great passion for inspiring and bringing the best out in young musicians. He strives to keep The Rock Academy relevant and interesting, focusing on making sure the best teachers are on offer with a modern library of music .  The methodology he has helped developed over the years is second to none. Pupils are engaged from the outset, playing music, having fun and learning with the correct techniques.

Geoff has gigged, recorded and worked in the music industry in New Zealand, England, Australia and France. He brings all this experience and knowledge to share with all The Rock Academy pupils and tutors alike. His accolades includes: 2003 – London – BBC – Featured artist programme for up and coming singer songwriters. 2006 – New Zealand – CD of the week Kiwi FM – The Stacks. 2007 – USA – American collage radio airplay – The Stacks.

Now with a young family his focus is on developing New Zealand talent of the future.

Shayna – Vocals, piano, ukulele and holiday programme mentor. 

Shayna is currently completing her Post Graduate Diploma for Classical Performance – Voice on top of her Bachelor of Music at Victoria University of Wellington. At age 7 she started piano lessons which began her love for music and coming from a very musical family she dabbled in many other instruments including saxophone, guitar, ukulele, singing, drums and recorder. Today she holds a Grade 8 certificate from Trinity Collage London in Piano and also Associate of Trinity Collage London in Voice. Before embarking on her classical music career Shayna was the lead singer of a local pop/rock band in Palmerston North, Venus in Transit that played in many community events such as Christmas in the Square, was the opening band for a number of people including I Am Giant, Benny Tipene and The Black Seeds and also competed in Battle of the Bands and New Zealand XFactor. Shayna has been in many recording studios throughout her life most notably for her uncle Phil Tweed, a successful musician/producer/songwriter in Australia as a guest artist. There is no style of music Shayna doesn’t appreciate but her most enjoyed singing styles are Opera, Jazz, Gospel and Musical Theatre.



Dylan – Guitar and holiday programme mentor.

Dylan is a guitarist currently finishing his final year in a contemporary music degree. Dylan has a wealth of experience recording, performing live and teaching. Although primary a rock guitarist Dylan also understands the fundamental and benefits of learning and playing a range of genres and promotes this in his guitar teaching. Dylan is very patient and also is one of the mentors at The Rock Academy holiday programme.





Briar – Vocals. Briar has completed a Masters in Composition at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington. Briar began music at age 6, beginning with piano, and later voice and guitar. Her well rounded appreciation for music of other cultures from a young age lead her to become a performer as a vocalist in Wellington groups such as The Balkanistas (Balkan gypsy), Gamelan Padhang Moncar (Javanese Indonesian), Gamelan Taniwha Jaya (Balinese Gamelan), Hypnos (Greek Folk), and Sacromonte (Flamenco), as well as her own guitar and vocal songs.

In college, Briar began singing in a number of rock bands, and participated in Battle of the Bands and Rock Quest. She also learnt the basis of her knowledge of singing technique through Chorale and Barbershop groups in college, both of which participated in national competitions such as the Big Sing, and the New Zealand Barbershop nationals.

Briar has been teaching at the Rock Academy since 2015 and loves inspiring and teaching kids. She enjoys all genres of music and most importantly, encourages kids to choose the music they enjoy too.


Joe – Drums

Joe is an exceotion drummer and has played everything from Metalica to Louis Armstrong. Full bio to come.

Pauly – Drums and Guitar

Pauly currently studies music at Whitireia, in his second year of my BAA majoring in drums.  However he is a multi instrumentalist, covering vocals, guitar, bass and piano.  Before moving to Wellington in 2013 to study and pursue his music career, Pauly had been teaching at several primary/intermediate schools throughout Hawkes Bay.  Two of which he ran the music departments, taking guitar/drum/bass lessons and the school bands.

 Jake – Guitar
Jake is a passionate guitarist equally at home on an acoustic or an electric guitar with live bands.  He has spent the last 10 years playing at many of Wellingtons live music venues. He most recently contributed lead guitar on What Noisy Cats 2015 album ‘A Different Ocean’. His playing style is melodic, angular and heavily influenced by British pop/rock guitarists of the 80s and 90s.

Claudia – Violin and Piano

The Rock Academy is extremely pleased top announce the arrival of Claudia our newest piano and violin teacher. Claudia has been playing the piano for 17 years and the violin since she was 4. She currently studies music at Victoria University.

Callum – Guitar 
Cullum is a 23 year old, UK born musician currently studying for a degree at Whitirea School of Music. He is a personable character and the passion he has for music is infectious. His pupils feel inspired by the energy he brings to the lessons.

His music loves include classic rock, blues rock and pop rock. He is also studying funk, jazz and RnB which he also relishes. This approach to music is always popular with the young pupils.

He has his own small recording set up at home which he produces his own original material, utilizing production software on computer based recording DAW (digital audio work stations). If any young musicians have an interest in writing and/or recording then Callum is happy to take them through the creative process.

He is an active music on the local gigging music scene playing with ‘Who Shot First’, an high energy  Wellington funk band. Callum is an exciting member of The Rock Academy teaching team and he comes highly recommend.

James is currently booked solid and that reflects his commitment to music and teaching. His passion for music covers most genres, jazz, country, progressive rock and everything in between. His lessons have a strong emphasis on developing groove, basic drumming knowledge and technique exercises.


James is an active musician playing live in various bands around Wellington and is an active sound engineer.





Dhanesh – Guitar

Guitar teacher Dhanesh teaches everything from classical through to rock and metal. He has worked around Wellington at various music teaching establishments and bring a wealth of experience.


Aryton – Piano and Keyboard

Aryton has done it all, studied music, played with some of the best musicians in town. From pop rock through to jazz, he has playede ans studied it all. Currently working part time for The Rock Academy and playing in about 5 bands in Wellington. You will be hard pressed to find a more commited music teacher.

Ellie – Vocal and ukulele.

Ellie is currently completing a degree in Jazz Performance. She has been singing her whole life and have a huge passion for singing with a strong ambition to pursue it as a career. She has completed grade 8 musical theatre performance diploma and has also taught singing in two separate institutions.

She has performed her whole life in groups and solo in many shows, concerts and competitions. She brings a light and vibrant energy to The Rock Academy singing lessons and the kids love singing with her.
